Personal Project

The term "Two-Spirit" designates the third gender, which coexists alongside the masculine and feminine genders, originating from Native American culture. Those who identify with this term possess both male and female characteristics, expressing these qualities spiritually, emotionally, and physically. Within Native American culture, intersex, androgynous individuals, feminine men, and masculine women have been highly respected. Their spiritual gifts are held in high regard, as they are considered doubly blessed and more spiritually gifted than those conforming strictly to traditional masculine or feminine roles. Two-Spirits were valued not only for their religious beliefs but also for practical reasons. Their blend of masculine and feminine traits allowed them to fulfill tasks traditionally assigned to both men and women. Consequently, they were seen as hardworking and artistically talented, bringing significant value to their extended families and communities.
